Research of interdisciplinary instruction indicates a correlation between interdisciplinary learning and a number of distinct educational benefits. Benefits include the ability to recognize bias, think critically, tolerate ambiguity, and acknowledge and appreciate ethical concerns -(Kavaloski 1979, Newell 1990, Field et al. 1994, Vess 2009). These skills are absolutely necessary essential in an upper level STEM classroom. Teaching statistics, quantitative literacy, and other upper level mathematics, I am always looking for ways to help my students see complex math concepts in the real world. Increasing reading & reflection helps train the brain for this work. With standardized testing including open response in many situations, my students need to realize how to read something, think about it, and explain both orally and in written form. Reading “fun” books helps engage students in this process so they can then translate those skills to higher order thinking in mathematics and other disciplines.
