Hands-on learning is the way to go with math. Whether it's a game, blocks, cards in a center, or whole-class learning, lightbulbs eventually come on in a child's mind. Manipulating objects and playing with a partner, while listening and discussing help fill in gaps for students. Not all students learn the same way or on the same day, but they are all capable of learning in their time and in their own way. And during teaching time, following me with pencil and paper can become boring. How fun would it be for a student to have their own dry eraser and marker while writing and working problems just like me instead of using a pencil and paper...Bor-ing!
