My elementary students come from all walks of life and often express a desire to play and engage with their peers (and with me) in meaningful ways. As the school counselor, I believe play is one of the ways children speak to us. It helps me build a trusting relationship, so they want to come to counseling and talk about their experiences at home and in their community. COVID has been especially challenging for our children. Playing in a safe place is one way we can start the healing process.
