Research shows that students acquire more language from free voluntary reading than many other strategies. The teacher provides class time and a variety of high-interest Spanish books written on a level appropriate for the students in the class. At first, the students read for a short period of time. As the year progresses, the amount of time dedicated to each reading session increases. Students are allowed to choose their book each time. If they like the book, the may continue reading it the next time. If not, they are allowed to choose another. The only goal for free voluntary reading time is for students to read to understand, and enjoy!
