From the educational standpoint, our students are enrolled in either earth science, biology, or chemistry. Through the use of our Hydroponic system we are able to hit a wide range of state standards through the use of the extremely hands on method of growing sustainable and renewable agriculture. Whether we are looking at the nutrient requirements of various plants, using the scientific method to identify and correct nutrient deficiencies; or we are learning how cultured bacteria can alter the flavor profile of a leaf; real world scientific application is being used to develop the students working knowledge of a wide range of scientific knowledge. From a functional standpoint; our students all qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. Most of our students have little or no access to fresh fruits and vegetable at home. Because of this, our students are usually malnourished or are experiencing obesity due to the cost and inaccessibility to high quality nutritious food. Our goal is to not only provide a high quality hands-on science experience, but also to provide fresh fruits and vegetable to all of our students. We are currently growing 20 heads of lettuce, two tomato plants, and three strawberry plants. These lights would allow us to triple this and provide our students with a continuous supply for fresh fruits and vegetables.
