97% of the 5th grade is free and reduced lunch, 88% minority, and 62% speak English as a Second Language. Most of our students come from homes where their parents have less than a high school education and/or are illiterate in both languages. Yet our students have an amazing work ethic and drive. My school has been an A school for 5 years in a row. My students are very poor and have limited life experiences to make connections when learning new knowledge. They need as many interactive and hands-on experiences to add to their knowledge base in order to fully understand abstract science concepts. My students love science and I try to find a variety of ways to present material to them and for them to get a mental picture of difficult science vocabulary. Their colorful science notebooks are packed full of pictures, diagrams, lab notes, outlines, cut and pasted information, and FCAT styles questions. Unfortunately, most of the notebooks are now full and students are not able to replace them.
