Our special education area is housed in a wing that has been left to its own devices. Often considered an area that "is just going to be wreaked anyways" it is not often maintained in the way we would like it to be. In recent years we have updated our student break space, added more comfortable furniture, and given students a space to keep their belongings. Now that we have the area safe, and comfortable we need to improve the aesthetic to increase its sense of calm and pride. In the past, our staff has tried to brighten the space by painting yellow walls and murals with primary colors. We have found these accents to be out of date, too intense for calming, and sometimes offensive (the autism community has gone away from the puzzle piece due to harmful rhetoric and connections to companies that don't support the community as a whole).
