My district is seeing a significant increase in our LatinX student population. This project uses the story of an immigrant from Central America and speaks to the incredible obstacles that this teenage boy must overcome to join his mother in the United States. The story highlights the reasons that immigrants come to the US, the personal impact that immigration can have on a family, and the conditions that immigrants are coming from and moving to once in the US. The story told in Enrique's Journey will open my students' eyes to the concept of immigration as a whole, but more importantly, will build empathy for students of different backgrounds. The book is unbiased, telling only the facts of the story. It does not offer a solution to the immigration question but allows students to use the information from the story and from the facts at the end to make up their own mind. This combination of statistics and personal story allows students to critically think while recognizing the human side of immigration as well.
