Students benefit from a variety of sensory-friendly atmospheres. We are looking to transform one of our unused rooms into an age-appropriate sensory room. In order to do this, we need furniture and items geared towards "adult-sized" students that will help them feel comfortable and calm while honoring their sense of dignity and independence. The goal of this room is to help in educating our students in constructive methods of regulating their emotions and behaviors as well as encouraging age-appropriate leisure activities and self-determination.
The unique shapes of saucer chairs and bean bags provide comforting uniform pressure as well as sensory input that promotes body awareness while focusing and calming the mind of our students. Along with the items listed, we will be changing the lighting and flooring allowing our students the ability to take a more active role in exploring their environment and tailoring their sensory room experience to best support their personal environmental needs. The shag rug will offer our students the ability to independently choose from a variety of tactile textures and stimulation based on their individualized level of sensory input needed. Combined, these additions would not only potentially provide immediate stress relief but allow our students a safe environment to practice positive coping skills they will benefit from for years to come.
