As a new teacher, I have been told three things about my first year. The first is that it will be so challenging yet the most rewarding time of my life. The second is that what students need is my love and support and the sense of belonging in my classroom. The final item of information I have been told about my first year teaching is to develop a classroom library early! Students who are in the second grade are at a vital time in their lives to read. Developing a love of reading now has an effect on how they are with reading later in life. By giving students plenty of books with variety and depth, students not only improve their reading abilities, but they go to places in their mind never thought possible, and they are excited about school each and everyday. Books provide an outlet where students can feel like they are wanted and belong. Getting lost in a story on a comfy seat is a simple joy in life that I want all of my students to be able to experience. In the 2021-2022 school year, and years after this next, I hope students are able to come to my classroom library feeling supported and ready to find a book that makes them feel like home.
