This past school year, my first grade students and I worked through the obvious challenges of a pandemic. While engaging in a hybrid model of school attendance, my six and seven-year-olds were required to maintain a distance of six feet when in the classroom. This left us sitting in desks most of the day. As you can probably imagine, such an expectation is very challenging for small, active children. Our routine was quite different than our fluid transitions between seat work, rug time, and small group/partnership activities during a typical school year. This project -Flexin' in First- is intended to grant my students flexibility again. I want them to enter our classroom this upcoming school year and feel the excitement of choosing more than a chair by their desks. Working to earn time on a cozy lounge couch or tilting on a wobble stool will add just the novelty we need while bouncing back from an all too rigid school year.
