Learning about diversity and recognizing oneself in books increases engagement and improves a sense of community. My students are so excited about reading and learning to read but many of them don't see themselves in the books they read. In order for students to feel that they are part of our classroom community, they need to feel seen and valued. To create a classroom community in which everyone feels safe and welcome, we need to learn from a number of perspectives and experiences. When students feel valued at school, they are excited to learn, and as they age, will have less apathy about school. The books I have chosen to add to my classroom library will increase engagement by allowing students to recognize themselves in the characters, which will, in turn, help them become stronger readers.
