These materials will be used by students in the classroom to help them discover that they are responsible for much of their learning. Students will use dictionaries to find and define unfamiliar or newly introduced vocabulary words. The goal is for this to become a healthy habit of pursuing understanding by using the tools around them. Knowing how to use a dictionary independently is a valuable life skill that I want to instill in these students. A class encyclopedia will help achieve the same goal of pursuing topics of interest and conducting research independently. DynaMath and SuperScience magazines are also great resources for independent learning. They capture student interest with fascinating topics (which this group of students goes nuts for) and then incorporates math and science content material, showing students how school content can be found in everything!
