Many students learn math through what seems like a series of isolated and unconnected skills and concepts. They oftentimes understand how to solve mathematical problems without context, but when these skills have to be applied to real world context, many students become confused. This hinders their growth and development. As a math teacher, it is my goal for my students to see math as an interrelated part of everyday activities and existence. Through this project, students will learn that math is literally everywhere, including some of their favorite pastimes, like basketball. The project focuses on the varying components of a basketball, such as air pressure, height of drop, material, etc.) and how these components impact performance. With these materials, students will be able to work in cooperative learning groups, testing different hypotheses, all while gaining an understanding that out lives are truly infused with math!
