Providing middle school students with culturally responsive literature will enable students to read about people that are different then themselves, but more importantly students of different backgrounds will see themselves being represented in the texts they read. These culturally diverse books will allow for my students to build empathy for others and get a sense of the struggles and hardships people go through. Similarly, students who deal with those hardships, see that they are not alone and find comfort in the books they read. Lessons can be created solely around specific reading strategies that allow students to make connections and allow for deeper critical thinking. These books were chosen with my students in mind as they have chosen books with similar attributes.

About my class
