We are trying to transform the library into a flexible space that will allow students to have options when they visit. The beanbag chairs will allow for flexible seating, and the new books will give the students an opportunity to read contemporary, high-interest works by diverse authors. Some of the titles were pulled from academic lists, but many are from best-seller and popular YA and Teen lit lists. Modern school libraries should focus on meeting the needs of students and providing them with positive experiences. Moving forward, we want the library to be recast as a common space where students are welcome to complete work, engage and collaborate with others, or simply take some time to read for enjoyment. The cameras are necessary to give some of the seating a sense of privacy and stillness, while still allowing for safety and monitoring.
