As I consult with parents and teachers, these materials will give me an opportunity to understand and implement the software and apps available to assist children, their caregivers and/or their teachers with strategies and ideas to address their motor skill delays while they are learning from home or at school. Children with and without disabilities are motivated by technology and are often anxious to participate in tasks they might otherwise deem too difficult when technology is involved. Children being interested in the activities they are participating in enhances motivation and lengthens the time they are willing to participate in tasks. Using an Apple Pencil creates opportunities for students to gain strength and fine motor coordination skills necessary for many academic tasks. Handwriting skills improve academic development. The use of technology in occupational therapy sessions allows for instant reinforcement with immediate visual and auditory sensory feedback, improving accuracy with tasks. This multisensory feedback enhances learning and neuropathway development. Using an iPad and a variety of apps, students can gain visual perceptual, visual motor and fine motor skills necessary to participate in their educational environment. Technology allows an avenue for motor skill practice that feels fun for children with disabilities who might otherwise avoid participation in some difficult areas of skill development.
