Students will read these books as part of choice-text book clubs. We rotate between reading core texts and choice texts. During core-text units, I teach students specific reading skills such as characterization, plot, theme, etc. Then, during choice-text units, they practice the use of the reading skills more independently. The choice-text units usually take place during writing units; every Friday during writing units, students meet in book clubs to share their findings. My students love the choice-texts because they are more diverse, and students often find them easier to connect to.
