Most of us have survived our childhood and adolescence sitting in hard plastic chairs pushed into square desks. But what if there was a better way to get our minds ready to engage with difficult curriculum? Flexible seating is a better option to help students feel comfortable, relaxed, and peaceful. With a mental state ready to learn, students will engage more fully in the difficult literature we read or be more willing to engage in discourse with their peers. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and home situations, so being able to give them a space that feels welcoming and peaceful will allow them to open up to learning content and expressing their thoughts and opinions about that content.
