I recently was afforded the opportunity to teach a "Mindful Makers" course, in which I meet with all the grades once a week to showcase how creativity and artistic experimentation is the perfect vehicle for emotional growth. We will be learning the basics of art and design such as color theory and the elements of art, as well as exploring how these things can be great tools to practice mindfulness, build up social-emotional skills. Our middle school students will also be given the opportunity to explore how art can be used to advocate for different causes and communities. They will look at different examples throughout history, consider the values that are important to them, and come up with their very own school mural to represent our community.
