As a special education teacher, I am working to create a safe place where my students can de-escalate, release behavior-creating emotions, and take required breaks to support their success in school. Requested breaks in class are an accommodation often found in IEP's within schools. We are working to create a wellness room complete with sensory toys, a diffuser, low lighting, focus toys, to support our students wellbeing and promote success. A wellness room has proven to provide the required support and breakaway needed for high school students to reset and continue working towards their success in their education. Providing a space for said reset is vital for my students as they are easily wound-up, easily discouraged, and difficult to find motivation. Oftentimes, our students who seek break times are found wandering halls, not knowing where they can actually take a break and can get into trouble. Providing a wellness/sensory room for our students to use specifically for those break times will lessen escape or avoidance, and support the reset required for success.
