Students will be studying a unit on animals and their habitats. Due to Covid, we are unable to go on a field trip to see any animals. Having bird feeders at the windows in our classroom will allow us to study these animals in depth. Students will make observations, discriminate between types, do research, and complete a writing assignment about the birds we see. Students will additionally be responsible for maintaining the bird feeders, which will give them a life skill they can utilize at home and later in life. Also, our students struggle to find appropriate leisure activities, and bird watching is a leisure activity they can engage in for the rest of their lives. Engaging in bird watching is also calming and promotes social and emotional learning.
