Our Significant Support Needs (SSN) high school students would love to do science/social studies labs together -- but this can be quite a challenge as their individual skill levels fall across a broad spectrum. An Archaeology Unit using the spectacular materials I found on Amazon gives us the unique ability to cater to their individual needs while at the same time letting them learn together as a class. Videos, worksheets, and plastic toys that typically find their way into our classroom are far less effective than a hands-on experience at helping a lesson sink in. And what a way to spark excitement! An owl pellet or two may be flung across the room and there's a good chance we'll see a plastic tweezer duel, but our special needs students will also be enhancing fine motor skills while being exposed to age-appropriate material during their dig. We'll start with homemade ooblek (sometimes it is a solid and sometimes it is a liquid) which will have dinosaur "fossils" hidden inside before it dries. This will be their first exposure to archaeology and practice for what's to come. Next, expectations and excitement increase during the fossils/gems dig using the National Geographic kits. By the end of the unit the students will dissect owl barf (okay, okay...pellets), carefully extracting and studying the bones found inside. Digging, research, reading, sketching, sharing ... there are so many skills this lesson encompasses! We can't wait to get started! From our students with autism or Down's syndrome to the ones in wheelchairs or talking through adaptive devices, the most awesome part of this extra-fun unit is that every kid will be able to participate in the same lesson with the same materials at the same time, uniting our class with this unique and exciting project!
