Due to the pandemic, independent pleasure reading has greatly decreased. Many students said they did not read a book the entire pandemic! Many public libraries shut down, and without librarians or teachers to guide them, they had no idea what to pick up or buy. My goal is to start the 21-22 school year immediately cultivating a love for reading! Through research, I have found the "First Chapter Friday" is a great way to do this. Once a week, I would lead the class by reading the first chapter of a high-interest young adult novel. I would cultivate a diverse selection of novels (different genres, different authors, different leads). Studies have shown that students are more likely to finish a novel if they read the first chapter. It is also proven that the hardest part of independent student reading is just finding a book they like! First Chapter Fridays could revolutionize reading for students, and fill the gaps forms due to the pandemic!
