Because our students come from a diverse background, many do not have access at home to high-quality books, if they have access at all. It is widely known that the more kids read, the more they learn . . . and the more successful they'll be in school. But the trick is, they have to WANT to read. They have to be motivated and excited about the books in their hands. Our classrooms need books that get kids motivated to read, which means they need books that reflect who they are as people. When kids can see themselves in books and can learn from those people and characters, they become more invested in reading. That investment leads to more and more reading, more learning, and greater success in elementary school and beyond. Getting kids hooked onto books early on is key!
