I am a first-year teacher excited to start her career in a 5th grade classroom. I believe that integrating social studies education into language arts instruction is a great way to promote a love of reading and an understanding of different perspectives and cultures. In fact, research shows that daily social studies instruction improves literacy scores! Because I am teaching in a Title I school with a large Latinx population, I want to provide students with books that both reflect their own experiences and introduce them to other world and community cultures. The books on this list are written by members of the communities represented through story to ensure cultural authenticity. The books sample cultures from all over the world and include novels, picture books, historical fiction, and even graphic novels to encourage all readers to explore all genres. A multicultural library helps students empathize with new perspectives and understand unfamiliar values and histories! Many of the books on my list also feature positive role models within the LGBTQ+ community. It is important that all my students feel safe and seen, and having LGBTQ+ characters in stories can remind them that all identities are valued in my classroom. On my book list, you'll also find popular series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Series of Unfortunate Events. These familiar stories are inviting to readers and it's important to me that students recognize books in the classroom library as it helps them feel comfortable approaching the bookshelves. Students are more likely to choose a new book if it's near familiar, well-loved books! Thank you for providing so many possible adventures for my students.
