The world of education is changing daily and thus we learn new ways to reach every student. Giving students the opportunity to take ownership in their learning and their seating has proven to help them reach their potential. Students can make their own decisions and decide which way to learn is best for them. In my science/social studies class we are already moving around doing hands on activities, but it is time to move away from the traditional heavy science tables and bring in a variety of choices. Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. The movement involved in flexible seating can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD and ADD. Another benefit of flexible seating increases higher order thinking skills, like emotional and problem-solving skills and conflict resolution. Students will have a system to choosing their seating which will require some patience. This change in their learning environment will be a positive change and lead to a year of growth after 2020!
