Learning about a culture as well as the language are important duos. Deaf culture and sign language are interesting, but do not receive as much emphasis as other languages and cultures. Every year my students read a book with a deaf character and present creative book reports using sign language. They get to experience the cultures and struggles deaf and hard of hearing people face on a daily basis. I also appreciate and use native signers through film to demonstrate appropriate language use. This supports language learning from a variety of signers.
