Studies have shown that students are more engaged when they are altogether at the carpet. The teacher can manage the class easier and the students can talk amongst each other in pairs easier for collaborative talk. ESL students in particular benefit from this by having increased attention span, collaboration with peers, and increased engagement with the teacher. Carpet time would help my students gain more knowledge in phonics, science, social studies, and sometimes math instruction. Test scores have been proven to increase with the use of carpet time in classrooms as well.
