The instruments that I chose for my students are lightweight and easy for them to move around in the classroom. The students can also sit at their desks, or in their wheelchairs and play along with the music without any difficulty. The students who like to dance can also play their instruments without any difficulty. Music helps build up and strengthen the weak areas of the brain of a child with learning disabilities while also having positive physical effects. Music also strengthens the auditory, visual/spatial, and motor cortices of the brain. Rhythmic movements help to increase a child's physical coordination and ability to concentrate. Music assists the non-verbal with other means of communication. The use of vocal exercises used in singing can enhance oral motor skills such as articulation, breath control, and vocal intensity. Music therapy can help our students develop positive attitudes toward their disabilities and provide opportunities for personal growth. Singing and speech have many commonalities. Since special needs kids often struggle to express themselves, they can use music as a way to express what they feel.
