My students come from diverse cultures and low socio-economic, disadvantaged homes with many children. 94% of my students receive free lunch. Several of my students are homeless and live with relatives. Many of the students are hispanic with limited English proficiency. This is reflective of the entire school population in the Renaissance School where I teach. Because of the environment in which my students have been raised, they come to school with very few experience on which to build solid academic concepts. Therefore, it is important that I enrich their learning experiences by incorporating varying activities that will meet the needs of all my students. Many are street wise, thus I have to create a safe, exciting learning environment that will assist in creating life-long learners who will want to continue learning as they progress through future grades.
