The materials will be used as the "missing link" in our students reading. It seems that throughout their education so far, they have missed the phonics and phonemic awareness pieces. Because of this, these beautiful, hard-working angels have a difficult time figuring out words when they are stuck. This prevents them from moving up in their reading levels.
My goal is to use these supplies in small groups to fill the void that so many low-achieving students have. Developing skills to problem solve at the word level will benefit them at the sentence and paragraph levels, all the way to full-text levels as they accelerate in their reading. One phonics activity I use allows students to scramble magnetic letters for the word and rebuild it correctly. Along with this, the students participate in an activity wherein they close their eyes, and assemble the word by feel of the letters. I may have them write a word omitting a letter (or letters) and work with a partner to identify the missing parts. Then they write it correctly. This makes the students think about how the word looks and how the word works. It helps them use their newfound knowledge with other words that follow the same pattern(s). With all of these, the students write self-generated sentences with the words to read/write them in context. This allows me to assess their use of the words. What really rewards me as a teacher is when a student identifies new words they've learned in text by saying, "Look, there's against. I know it because I see again in that word and the /st/ (sound) at the end." By integrating phonics with reading and comprehension, the students can put it all together and READ-the cornerstone to their future!
