The items I am requesting will enhance student understanding of the time period we will study at the time. Both of these novels are considered "Young Adult Literature." They both have characters that are in their early teens; therefore making them relatable to the students in my classroom. The first novel I am requesting is, "Day of Tears" by Julius Lester. This novel is set in Savannah, Ga during 1859. Julius tells an engaging story based on the historical event of the largest slave trade in American history. This resource will help to provide a literary understanding of this event and relate it in their Georgia Studies class. The second novel I am requesting is, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. This novel will serve as an anchor text for our research unit on The American Civil Rights Movement. The main character is also in her early teens and very relatable to the students in my class. The setting for this novel is South Carolina, 1964. This novel is an inspiring tale of a young woman traveling with her 'nanny/housekeeper' to register to vote.
