Mindfulness is a powerful practice that helps us bring our attention to the present moment, allowing us to better regulate our emotions and relieve stress. When implemented in schools, mindfulness allows students to benefit from improved cognitive functioning, social-emotional regulation, and overall well-being. In turn, these enhanced skills instill within students a lifelong resilience that empowers them to overcome adversity well beyond their time in school. The purpose of my project is to introduce mindfulness into our school community by creating an intentional space where our students can immerse themselves in mindful activities, enhancing their social and emotional development. The Mindful Panther Den will be a place where students may practice mindfulness, guided breathing, stretching exercises, art, and other calming activities. Resources used in this project include yoga mats, puzzles, watercolor boards, coloring books, mindfulness cards, and guided meditation books. My vision for this project is that mindfulness will ultimately reduce behavioral offenses that stem from anger and unresolved trauma, in turn preventing the need for exclusionary discipline practices.
