Making math meaningful to students and keeping the students engaged is so very hard these days with all of the distractions students encounter. Students do not enjoy taking notes in class, and studying for exams is frustrating for many. I want to help my students create an authentic, interactive notebook that will carry them through Sixth grade and beyond! My students will be creating something meaningful and learning how to take effective notes that will help them throughout middle school, high school, and perhaps post-secondary learning. The interactive notebooks will be created using the bright colored paper to make foldables and notes, the different colored pens to write their notes, the different colored highlighters to make vocabulary words or important concepts "pop" off the page, and each student's own creativity or imagination. Having students create an interactive notebook will allow me to address the various learning styles in my classroom, reinforce the content vocabulary with my English Language Learners, and provide differentiated instruction for students in my class. The interactive notebook will become a valuable tool for them to use when we are reviewing for a unit test, a district Content Based Assessment (CBA), or our state assessment. Students will be able to take these interactive notebooks home to review for a test, or to help complete an assignment. Otherwise, we will keep them in my classroom so that we have access to them for daily use. At the end of the year, students will be able to take them home to keep for future use.
