First impressions are always important. Capturing a first time reader’s attention is just as vital. Our bilingual, ESL, and special education students need a print-rich and visually appealing environment to sustain their attention spans after an unprecedented year of remote learning from home as the spread of COVID-19 has perpetuated in our city. By the same token, as educators, we challenge students to exercise their learning abilities using their strengths and talents to appeal to the child’s sense of creative ability. Therefore, in order to honor autonomy and ownership of a newly reopened library to welcome the public, I believe students and parents would joyfully return to a grand re-opening ceremony featuring their child’s artwork for all to see and enjoy. The ideal mission would require the student to weave in the message of visually appealing, print-rich messages encouraging others to practice reading and writing in the library to welcome students back with a sense of pride and ownership in their learning community. With these new visually enhanced student paintings, our library will encourage students to read in a warm and welcoming learning environment they have created.
