Flexible seating has become commonplace, especially in Language Arts and English classrooms. Not only is this practice supported by experienced teachers and those who study ongoing and developing pedagogical theories, but it's also supported by multiple studies of students' performance after they've been given choice and participation options within a classroom or lesson. Often students who participate outside of the traditional rows of desks in a classroom perform better and experience less stress than their non-flexibly-seated peers. This doesn't just help the students who simply prefer a beanbag chair over a plastic one--this works to effectively and inclusively accommodate students with a variety of learning styles and needs. I intend to furnish my 8th grade classroom with tables of different heights, so that students can choose to work while standing or sitting on the floor. With two different chair options, students would be able to choose between a chair with a wide seat and no backrest, or a chair with a high backrest. Beanbag chairs are highly moveable and can be used in tandem with clipboards to work at different places in the room while bringing necessary materials alongside. In general, students who have more ownership, choice, and independence within a classroom are more likely to be engaged with the material and learn it more readily. In my classroom, I already allow my students as much choice as possible when it comes to the content of the books and stories they consume; not only can they evolve with their new preferences, they begin to realize that they can learn ANYTHING they want if they are willing to try multiple ways of doing it, and stay flexible!
