I am trying to engage a group of students with interests such as comic books, science-fiction, and tabletop rpgs, and using these resources to teach the same skills many are struggling to learn from the traditional ELA texts. I plan to use these non-traditional sources to challenge their thinking, expose them to unique subcultures and hobbies, and get them excited about future ELA projects! I believe comic books, fantasy literature, and roleplay are excellent vehicles to attract and engage many students who have waned in their participation with traditional English texts and may have doubts about their abilities as a result. This will show them they have the ability and the skills necessary to jump back in!
