As of right now, my students do not have books to read in the classroom. This is a huge problem. When they get a break, they immediately jump on their computers simply because they don't have an option to do anything else. I want to build a rich library for my students so that they have access to books in a way that they haven't before. Since there is no library at my school, this space will be used by a lot of students and therefore, I want it to be full of stories that reflect on kinds of backgrounds and experiences. My students are brave and talented and brilliant, and yet, they don't have all of the resources that they need to be the best versions of themselves. I want this library to be a space for them to grow personally and academically. As a young black educator, I remember my middle school years and how important books were to me. They showed me that what I was experiencing was not foreign but rather, completely normal. With these books, I am certain that I will see an increase in the love of reading and find confidence as they venture on the very complicated journey that is the teenage years.
