In my charter school, we teach our students the 7th Habits from Stephen Covey from kindergarten to 9th grade. They all receive lessons on being a successful leader at school and in life. In the middle school, all students have the opportunity to choose what "Elite Team" they would like to be a part of to help serve in the school. I have the honor of working with the Celebrations Team- we celebrate each middle schooler's birthday, create multicultural and mental health bulletin boards helping to expand the students' knowledge of different groups and ideas and to highlight the Great Americans that are among us in each classroom. This has been a hands on experience for my team- one that they didn't have the opportunity to do since we have been effected by coronavirus. Nomination of the Great American Award is given by each teacher to a student in their classroom that shown characteristics that our school is teaching in the 7 Habits as well as the Leader in Me program. Our job in the Celebration team is to celebrate those students who have received the award. What a wonderful experience it is when the student finds out that they have been chosen by their teacher! The Celebration team takes their picture and a certificate is given. After the picture is taken, it is printed and displayed by their classroom in the hallway for all to see. Seeing the awarded students' joy on a personal level is inspiring, strengthens their character and resolve to be a better citizen. I have been printing all the pictures at my house as my school does not have a color printer for the teachers to use and the iPad we have is old and out of date. These tools would be so helpful!
