My students struggle, as most high school freshman do, to define who they are as an individual. Many students have problems going on in their home lives, and school becomes a safe haven for many. While my school does an excellent job preparing students for state testing, the ACT, and College, it does struggle to encourage reading for fun in students. While we do have a school library, many freshman struggling to find their identity, don't want to be seen in the library. This access to literature in the classroom that students can identify with, find inspiration and hope in, is essential for students who don't feel represented in everything from the presidential speeches we read to the poems about butterflies. This literature will be used to encourage students to enjoy what they are reading for class, and coupled with high interest literature is increased success in assignments and rising literacy rates. These engaging books will be used to teach many topics like theme, character development, and word choice. Please help me motivate my students to become better readers and writers through the use of identity representation in my classroom literature.
