The ability to choose, especially as a child, creates a sense of power and self-accountability. To help my students become accountable and advocate for themselves, I want to provide them with the choice of flexible seating in their classroom. Right now, they only have standard chairs and desks. If given the opportunity to have flexible seating, they would be able to choose their own success. As second-graders, the power of choice is rare; with flexible seating options, my kids would be able to choose to be successful in their own ways. My room is their room for as long as they are in it, and the variety of seating options would make them more comfortable and give them ownership of our classroom as well. By giving them the power to choose, even in this small way, I hope to encourage self-advocacy, teamwork, and compromise.
