Starting with an exploration of the very birds who visit our backyards, my third graders have been learning about the relationship between living things and their life cycles. My goal is to empower my students to connect with nature in a meaningful way. What started as an introduction to backyard birds has grown into an appreciation amongst my students for the birds they see in their communities. To continue to encourage my students to go outside and observe the natural world around them, I'd like to gift each of them a pair of binoculars. My hope is that with each new bird they see, they'll experience pride and joy of learning it's name and sharing that piece of knowledge with others.
