Many students in my Language Arts and Reading class simply do not read enough. I have a notion that the cause is because they haven't been presented with enough genres to engage their interest. I think a fantastic way to engage timid readers is to fill my in class bookshelf with comics and manga that not only have words, but illustrations. This can also benefit my ELL students who struggle with English by having depictions of scenes which accompany the words on page. I have selected materials recommended for middle school grade levels in my list. The list is a diverse selection, made up of first volumes, that would engage students to follow up on future volumes or similar readers.
