Children with learning disabilities face many obstacles that impede learning, including emotional issues related to their disability. Even a poor night's rest or a change in schedule can contribute to their emotional distress, which can then magnify their learning disabilities. Positive reinforcement, such as a rewards system, will help children develop positive habits as they demonstrate expected behaviors. The rewards system is entirely different from a bribe, which occurs when children are persuaded to act (or not act) in a certain way by receiving a gift. Instead, the rewards system will increase the likelihood that the children will repeat the expected and desired behavior, as well as boost their self-esteem, which in turn will enhance their performance. By using school supplies that are a little more *remarkable* (scented, colorful, or pleasing to look at), these rewards will go a long way in motivating our students to work towards their daily and weekly goals, despite any emotional duress they may be experiencing.
