In the past, students at my school have not had access to relevant and engaging novels, and many of my students have not even experienced the magic of reading a novel from start to finish. Starting in the 21-22 school year, all students will read multiple full-length novels a year. But, this requires access to texts that students WANT to read. I believe that I have found four novels that students will not be able to put down: The Firekeeper's Daughter, American Born Chinese, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, and Feed. When I realized that my students needed to be reading more, I knew that it would have to be centered around an approach to reading that would foster their growth and encourage them to identify as readers. Alongside my ELA team, I settled on literature circles, wherein students will have an opportunity to choose the text they WANT to read. Multiple times a week, students will gather with a small peer group to read and discuss their text. I am excited for my students to have an opportunity to read and make meaning of a text alongside their peers.
