In the school that I teach in, 57% of the students are Asian, 19% are Latino, and 17% are White. In an effort to build inclusive classrooms and foster a generation where love is chosen over hate, I am working to build a classroom library that works to be windows into other people's lives and mirrors to reflect their own. Books and reading materials are crucial, practical tools that enable teachers to bring more of the world to their kids and help them develop kindness and empathy for the people around them. Paolo Bacigalupi said, “The more I write stories for young people, and the more young readers I meet, the more I'm struck by how much kids long to see themselves in stories. To see their identities and perspectives—their avatars—on the page. Not as issues to be addressed or as icons for social commentary, but simply as people who get to do cool things in amazing worlds." It is a powerful moment when children are able to open a book and see themselves represented. Many of the books that are currently in our classroom library have been bought through our own personal expenses. Please help my students have a library that brings us one step closer to a culturally responsive classroom!
