During a stressful period in my life, I started practicing yoga and mindfulness, which benefited me both physically and mentally. I have tried different mindful activities in my classroom such as meditation and having students select a positive affirmation for the class period. I have received positive feedback from students when I've used these different practices. However, I believe that I have only scratched the surface of implementing mindfulness practices into my classroom. I want to learn more and be trained in how to effectively use, not only yoga and mindfulness practices with my students, but also social-emotional learning skills that students can use throughout their lives. This project will help cover the cost of the Breathe For Change training program which is a wellness training program conceived by educators for educators. Upon graduation from Breathe for Change, I will become certified to lead wellness and social-emotional learning programs at my school (both for students and for other educators). Additionally, I will earn a nationally recognized RYT-200 yoga teacher certification. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives. Teaching them wellness tools like yoga, mindfulness activities, and social-emotional learning skills will help them to cope with their trauma and to better handle stress in their lives.
