I am requesting books to support my learners in building social competency through literature. The books will support my students in our ELA unit focusing on exploring diverse topics and perspectives. I want my students to read about relatable stories but, I also want them to get to experiences lives that are different from their own. Throughout our unit we explore a variety of social issues, focusing on teaching tolerance and a willingness to engage in challenging conversations. During this time students will be working on mastering a variety of reading standards: point of view, perspective, tracking character growth, connecting nonfiction and fiction and pulling out overarching themes. The books will directly support these conversations and experiences both during book clubs and independent reading.
