As an 7th grade English/Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) teacher to 100 hard-working and talented students from diverse backgrounds, it is imperative that I bring my A-game regarding top-notch best-practice learning strategies and engaging, relevant literature. I desire to expand my classroom library to contain two sets of novels: 30 copies of The Giver by Lois Lowry and 30 copies of Refugee by Alan Gratz. With these books available in my classroom, my students who cannot afford to purchase their own copies can access the stories during class and after school hours (and maybe into the wee hours of the morning!). These novels will be the center of our literature circles in my Accelerated and On-level courses. Students will form “book clubs” to plan and read the text in order to make connections to their lives, what’s on the news, and other texts they have previously studied. Both novels offer the reader many opportunities to make these connections. I believe it is absolutely necessary for my students to study these exceptionally well-written texts. Our ELAR TEKS require students to analyze plot elements including the use of foreshadowing and suspense to advance the plot (7.7c). Both texts provide exceptional examples to accomplish this lofty expectation. In addition, 7th graders are required to infer multiple themes within and across texts, explaining how themes are developed through the interaction of characters and events (7.7a). Studying these novels in literature circles will open our eyes to what life is like for those facing this incomprehensible uncertainty and instability. I cannot think of more appropriate texts to assist my students in mastering these objectives. Above all, I cannot think of more appropriate texts to help students develop and express empathy for those around them.
